Knee Arthroplasty
Knee replacement surgery or arthroplasty is performed to relieve pain and restore the function of a knee joint that has become diseased by arthritis or another degenerative condition. During knee arthroplasty surgery, the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with an artificial joint. This joint will be made of metal or a high-grade plastic. The specific artificial knee joint used will depend on age, weight, overall health, and physical activity level.
Total knee arthroplasty is an inpatient procedure that will require an overnight hospital stay. The expected recovery time of a knee arthroplasty is several weeks. Physical therapy is also employed to help rebuild the strength in the knees and to help restore mobility and full range of motion.
