Staying Warm Outside

With temperatures dropping during the winter months, it is very important for athletes to stay warm while outside. By keeping yourself properly clothed, you may reduce the risk of injury during your winter workout.

Whether you are going for a run or participating in a winter sport here are some helpful tips to keep your muscles warm and help prevent injury:

  • Stretching before running or participating in an activity or sport can help prevent muscle injuries like tears or strains.
  • Wear waterproof shoes. Winter months bring along snow, rain, and slush, so it is important to keep your feet dry.
  • Try to avoid wearing cotton. Cotton retains moisture from sweat and does not do a good job of blocking the wind.
  • Layer up.  Layering up is crucial in keeping warm. Wearing “wicking” clothing will pull the moisture away from the skin and onto the exterior of the fabric, keeping you warm and dry.
