Local Track Star Back in Action After Rare Foot Surgery With Dr. David Epstein

Former Randolph High School and Wake Forest University track athlete Meghan O'Malley thought her days of competing in high jump, long jump, and triple jump were over when what started as a stress fracture from hurdling developed into a unique navicular bone injury.

"It was so frustrating because the injury just wasn't healing like it should have," said O'Malley, a 2019 Randolph High graduate who competed at the collegiate level through 2024. "What seemed like a typical stress fracture turned into something much more complex."

After seeking a second opinion, O'Malley found local surgeon David M. Epstein, M.D., at Tri-County Orthopedics, who performed a specialized cartilage graft procedure on her navicular bone—a relatively unique treatment that showcases advancing orthopedic techniques.

Today, thanks to Dr. Epstein's innovative approach and O'Malley's determination, she's back to the activities she loves and eager to share her recovery story.

"Dr. Epstein gave me hope when I thought there wasn't any," said O'Malley. "The specialized procedure he performed made all the difference. I'm grateful to be back on track—literally and figuratively."

Her story highlights both medical innovation and the power of seeking the right expertise for complex injuries, particularly relevant as winter sports seasons approach.
