Tri-County Orthopedics Helps Vietnam Surgeon Perform Groundbreaking Procedure

When a 35-year-old motorist got in an accident early this year and had complications in his hip after treatment, he found the ambitious orthopedic surgeon Truong Viet Thong, M.D., in Ho Chi Minh City. Three weeks after Dr. Thong’s patient underwent a new surgery, Dr. Thong says, “he felt great and went back to his normal life.”

New Jersey–based not-for-profit OrthoNations, whose teachers include local surgeons Dr. Kenneth Montgomery and Dr. Stephen Hunt of Tri-County Orthopedics, seeks to bridge surgical training gaps between the United States and overseas areas with limited access to advanced techniques.

The minimally invasive procedure performed, a hip arthroscopy, was the first of Dr. Thong’s career and the start of a brighter future for advanced orthopedic care in Vietnam. Dr. Thong received training in United States techniques through OrthoNations and worked closely with Dr. Hunt in developing complex skills commonly used to treat patients at Tri-County Orthopedics.

“There was no place, no hip surgeon, no lab . . . until I met Dr. Montgomery, who brought me to the U.S. to meet Dr. Hunt, the best hip scope surgeon in the world, who taught me the techniques, and I had a great chance to practice and improve my skill.”

That training, says Dr. Thong, made him confident and pushed him to develop hip arthroscopy in his hospital and his country. “After three months in the U.S.,” says Dr. Thong, “I have become a better surgeon.”
