Traveling? Lug Your Luggage Wisely

Heavy luggage can take a toll on your body, leading to injuries that commonly affect the back, neck, and shoulders. Many of these injuries occur when lifting, carrying, or maneuvering overpacked suitcases, making proper packing and lifting techniques an important part of safe travel.

Tips to help avoid strains and other pains when you travel include:

  • Pack lightly using multiple bags.
  • Bend your knees and lift using your leg muscles, not your back.
  • Keep your back straight and avoid twisting while placing luggage in your car.
  • Switch the bag from one side to the other when carrying luggage through an airport.
  • Carry light pieces in each hand, rather than one heavy item in one hand to balance the weight.
  • When placing luggage in an overhead compartment, lift it onto the seat before grabbing either side of the suitcase to lift it into the compartment.
  • If using a backpack, use both straps to distribute the weight evenly to avoid strain.
  • Select and use luggage with wheels when walking long distances.
  • When buying new luggage, look for one that is sturdy and lightweight.

Even with the best precautions, injuries can still happen. If you experience back pain, neck pain, shoulder discomfort, or another injury while traveling, don't ignore the symptoms. Early evaluation and treatment can help prevent a minor injury from becoming a more serious problem.
