My Tri-County Orthopedics Story: Mary W.

Dr. Goldman Changed My Life

I was in my early 30's when my right hip began to fail. I was an avid jogger, and had intense hip pain, but thought at the time that I was putting too much pressure on the joint and that it was sciatica. Unfortunately, the pain worsened. I went to at least three other orthopedists before Dr. Goldman, all of whom misdiagnosed me and told me it was my back. Several back MRI's and PT referrals later, I could still barely walk or tie the shoe on my right foot. I was essentially disabled. Finally, in PT for my back, the physical therapist to whom I was assigned, (and to whom I am eternally grateful), suggested to me that it was not my back, but my hip (his name was John Vicchio, bless him, I'll never forget his kindness and knowledge). I think I already knew that, but I needed another doctor to do the investigation. Some of my colleagues at school mentioned Dr. Robert Goldman, so I made an appointment. He was kind, compassionate, calm, and let me know that it was indeed my hip that was failing and that I would need total hip replacement surgery to make it right (kind of a shock at the time), which I finally had in 2002. I can honestly say that Dr. Goldman saved my life. The pain was beyond tolerance, the disability was increasingly evident, and, as a relatively young patient for the procedure, I was unsure how it would go, how long the implant would last, if I would need a revision, what the ramifications would be, what to expect in ten years or more. The last thing I remember before entering the operating theatre was Dr. Goldman wheeling me into surgery (HIMSELF--unheard of!), where he replaced my hip with a titanium implant. Almost 25 years later, the implant is still there, and still as good as new. I was facing another god knows how many years of pain and disability, and was saved from that by Dr. Goldman. I am eternally grateful for his skill and kindness and would never recommend another orthopedic surgeon. He is the gold standard. Congratulations to Tri-County for 40 years of saving patients so much pain and disability. It's truly a gift to be able to do that, and I am forever in his debt.
